WATER AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENTWater is a scarce natural resource in most regions of India. Access to adequate water of potable quality for drinking and other uses is imperative for physical, social and economic well being. At the same time inappropriate management of wastes has various direct as well as cumulative impacts on environmental resources, people and livelihoods. In the area of water management our focus is on technological interventions for provision of water security in quantity and quality, not only for drinking and sanitation but also for productive economic uses. Rain Water HarvestingTIDE has a varied expertise in rain water harvesting. Rooftop harvesting has been done for individual houses, apartments and large establishments, from paved and unpaved areas in urban and rural areas. TIDE also develops designs for rainwater harvesting and provides training in roof top harvesting and ground water recharge. Mitigation of fluoride from ground waterTIDE is conducting awareness campaigns, carrying out studies and interventions in options for mitigating of flouride from ground water. Some successful methods tested are activated alumina filters and artificial recharge of drinking water borewells with roof top harvested water. Technology Interventions in waste management In the area of environmental management our focus is largely on technology interventions for aerobic and anaerobic treatment of solid waste, treatment of industrial waste waters like high BOD coffee effluents. Bio-reactorsA bioreactor is a versatile product developed at the Centre for Sustainable Technologies, IISc and demonstrated in actual working conditions by TIDE. The bioreactor is a plug flow digester than can produce methane by anaerobic fermentation of solid and liquid organic wastes Water management in peri-urban areasTIDE, supported by Dept. of Science and Technology, Govt. of India is implementing an innovative project that involves planning and providing for water needs in peri urban areas where the water demand for different needs varies with stages of urbanization. |
