HOODS IN THE SILK INDUSTRYSilk in India is produced in cluster based reeling units. A large percentage of workers are women and children and they are affected by occupation related ailments like asthma and pulmonary tuberculosis. This is because of the absence of suitable low cost solutions to eliminate harmful steam, smoke and heat from the working environment. TIDE adopted a participatory technology development process to develop hoods that would remove harmful sericin containing steam from the working environment. Hoods were developed for three different types of silk reeling basins.: Italian type reeling basin Ramanagaram type reeling basin Charakha reeling basin The three reeling basins are different in size, shape, amount of silk reeled, volume of steam released, the reeling techniques practiced and the premises where reeling is done. The following features have been specified for the hood
