Papagni WatershedThe Papagni watershed project was carried out for the National Tree Growers Cooperative Federation,(NTGCF) Anand, which is a division of the National Dairy Development Board, Anand, Gujarat. The Project area is a watershed of 4401 sq.kms. Under this project, a cadastral level GIS database was prepared. The scale of work is 1:50000.The output of this project is being currently used for macro level planning of NTGCF activities in the project area. The project area comprises 886 villages in the taluks of Bagepalli, Srinivasapur, Siddlaghatta, Chikkaballapur, and Chintamani of Karnataka State and Vayalpad, Madanapalli, Rayachoti, Chittoor and Kadiri of Andhra Pradesh. The first phase of the project on 1:250000 scale has been completed and is being currently used for macro level planning of NTGCF activities in the project area. In the second phase, the database on 1:50000 scale was completed and is being used for carrying out watershed management activities, planning for the development of wastelands, taking up soil conservation works and aforestation activities. A major component of the project was the preparation of Land use / Land cover, Hydrogeomorphology and Soil maps by interpreting remote sensing satellite data. Both digital image processing and visual interpretation techniques were used to interpret satellite data of IRS 1C LISS III (digital data) & IRS 1B LISS II (Geocoded imageries). The watershed map was prepared using Survey of India toposheet and All India Soil and Land Use Planning (AIS&LUP) guidelines. The entire watershed has been subclassified up to micro watershed level with a unique code for the purpose of watershed management. The other thematic information in this project are all categories of roads and rail network, electrical network, contours, streams and rivers, tanks, forests, telephone lines, bore well locations etc. The attribute information for villages includes census statistics, landuse and civic amenities, for road layer, the type of roads and their lengths. Contour height and landuse classes are the attributes for contours and landuse respectively. A large team from the NTGCF has collected village maps and marked the distribution and availability of government land and common lands for some villages. This information is included into the GIS database. Also the land records information for each village is incorporated. The softwares that were used are ENVI with IDL of image processing, Arc/Info, ArcView for GIS and Microstation & AutoCad for drafting.
