FOCUS : WATER AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

Project: Analytical study on Urban Sanitation and Waste management, preparation of MSW action plans.

Funded by: SASES Unit, The World Bank

Duration: November 2004 - March 2005

The study involved preparation of action plans for solid waste management and scenario base don financial modeling for the three towns of Bellary, Shimoga and Tiptur in Karnataka and the hilly towns of Nainital, Shillong and Shimla. The study was undertaken in association with TIDE Technocrats and Sycom Projects, New Delhi. An action plan for solid waste management for each town was prepared. This included information about the present situation and the proposed system, the equipment required, the staff deployment and the funds required. Based on the ground reality at each location, alternate scenarios of expenditure have been prepared. A comprehensive report for the hill towns bringing out special features was also prepared.

The study has shown that there is scope for improving the efficiency of operations in all towns. There is a need for segregating collection of dry and wet waste in the initial period to ensure segregated waste handling. There is a need for flexibility in processing and disposal standards in small towns to match financial ability.
