Community participation in formulation and implementation of urban / municipal programs would ensure that benefits reach all section of society. Capacity building of citizens and better interaction with elected representatives is necessary for better program design, implementation and access to basic civic amenities

Urban Governance, Civil Society and Local Economic Development

Phase I: A study of 7 cities of Karnataka (namely Madikeri, Ramnagaram, Mangalore, Udupi, Hubli-Dharwad, Shimoga and Gokak) has been carried out, to identify the role of citizens and other stockholders in governance, in terms of obtaining the services or in finding solutions to the problems (1999).

Phase 2: This is more action-oriented, with an objective to use and propagate various interventions and action research tools for efficient urban governance by actively working with the community at the ward level. Mangalore and Udupi cities have been identified for the Phase 2 project being implemented during April 2000 to March 2002.

Technology Intervention Program For Poverty alleviation in Nagasandra Village, Mulbagal Taluk, Kolar District , Karnataka

The Nagasandra village in Kolar District of Karnataka has been identified for implementation of the technology intervention programme during November 1999 – October 2002. The criteria for selecting this village were socio economic backwardness, lack of avenues for socio-economic development. The main objective of the project is to bring about a qualitative and quantitative change in the village through the intervention of simple and relevant technologies. To achieve this, the following areas have been identified for intervention like Desilting of Village pond, Improved Agricultural practices, Initiation of Nursery and Introduction of Village Industry in the Village.
